What does a welding-cell quote actually cover?

Two quotes can carry the same ‘robotic welding cell’ label yet deliver different assets. A robot-only offer can omit the power source, workholding and safety. An integrated package can still stop at factory handover. A turnkey scope must specify whose site utilities, installation labor and acceptance work are included.

Treat price as the last column of a comparable RFQ. First normalize the bill of materials, interfaces, acceptance tests and lifecycle obligations. Lincoln Electric's published package tiers and Miller Electric's catalog illustrate why the word ‘cell’ does not define one standard bundle.

Which inputs change robotic welding cell cost?

The largest design changes often come from the part rather than the brand. Size and mass affect robot reach and positioner sizing; joint access affects torch geometry, cable routing and fixture complexity; fit-up variation may require sensing or upstream process changes. Part family count affects programming, validation and changeover.

Output targets should distinguish arc-on time from the entire cycle: loading, clamping, positioner index, welding, cleaning, inspection and unloading. A second station may hide loading behind welding, but only if the real part flow supports it. Destination, utilities, safety assessment, delivery terms and service geography may change the commercial scope without changing the robot model.

From a rough estimate to an auditable quotation

A budgetary estimate is useful for screening; it is not a final contract. The RFQ should identify assumptions and open engineering risks. After a workpiece and layout review, request a revision-controlled BOM, an inclusion/exclusion schedule, interface drawing and acceptance protocol. Only then compare commercial totals.

Factory acceptance testing (FAT) and site acceptance testing (SAT) are separate gates. Define sample parts, pass/fail criteria, who supplies consumables, who records weld quality, who resolves nonconformities and when payment milestones become due. For cross-border projects, explicitly assign packing, freight, customs and on-site commissioning.

  • Do not treat ‘FAT included’ as sufficient without part count, test duration and signed evidence list.

Frequently asked questions

Is the robot arm price the welding-cell cost?

No. A usable cell can also require a welding source, torch, fixture, positioner, safety, integration, testing and site work. Ask for an inclusion/exclusion schedule before comparing totals.

Is a positioner always included?

No. It may be a separate option or unnecessary for a particular part. Confirm workpiece orientation, mass, inertia and weld access, then specify the exact axes and tooling scope.

What should a FAT clause specify?

Name the sample parts, operating sequence, cycle and weld acceptance criteria, witness rights, records, nonconformity handling and re-test responsibility. ‘FAT included’ without a protocol is ambiguous.

Can TubeFrame give a standard welding-cell price?
